Using Microsoft FrontPage to Create a Website.

Download, change and upload a webpage.

I am running XP Professional operating system and FrontPage 2002 which was a part of my Microsoft Office suite of applications.

If you don’t have FrontPage, you can get a new or used copy from Amazon or Ebay for about $50.

You can get a Trial Version of FrontPage 2003 for $7.95, shipping and handling here http://www.microsoft.com/office/frontpage/prodinfo/trial.mspx

Here’s a screen shot of FrontPage 2002.

This is how it would appear if you just started FrontPage from the normal Start Menu on your desktop.

Start-Programs-Microsoft Frontpage link

From the above screen

You choose File-Open

Then in the filename editbox, type in the url to your free page as I have done for mine, click open

Here’s my free page opened in FrontPage and ready for editing.

However, you should understand that you can change this downloaded copy of your free page. But you will NOT be able to save it to the SFI server. The SFI webserver will not allow you to upload changes to any of your Gateways. This prevents anyone who doesn't have permission from changing anything.

What you can do is to basically duplicate the page onto a webserver that you have permissions for uploading files to.  You set up a hosting account with whomever you choose.

(see http://hosting-how-to.com ) If you already have your account setup you will know your username and password. This is the security (like that on SFI’s servers) which prevents unauthorized changes.

So to get this modified page to your hosting account, you simply choose File- Save As

You see the window in the screenshot below (just behind the login window)

Click on the My Network Places Icon on the left (see it highlighted below)

and enter the address of your domain name and the name of the page you want to assign to this file into the Filename edit box (see it below)

An example would be: http://dollarware.us/free.html

Important NOTE: html pages can be saved with either extensions of .htm or .html so just make a decision of which one to use and stay with that one.

FrontPage would then use that web address to connect to the webserver of your hosting service.

The server would ask for your username and password and a login screen would appear on top of the FrontPage window. Enter that and click on the checkbox by “Remember my password”.

Windows will save the login information for you and automatically fill it in for you the next time you save to your webserver so that all you have to do the next time is click the OK button in the login window.

Frontpage uploads your modified page to your webserver.

Go to the address of the page you just changed and see your modified page. Or if it is already opened in a browser window, click the Refresh button which tells the browser to get a new copy of the page.

To recap:

You got a copy of your SFI “free” webpage from SFI’s webserver.

You modified it using FrontPage to include any changes you wanted.

Then you used FrontPage to upload the page to your webserver.

Once you actually use the procedure a few times it will become really easy.
